Join Santa Fe textile artist Wendy Katzman at Hat Ranch Gallery for a full day of natural dyeing using Indigo.
Dyeing with Indigo plants is a skill that seems to have emerged simultaneously around the world in prehistoric times, before communication amongst regions. This is a fascinating example of humanity’s curiosity and the continuation of traditional methods of personal adornment and decoration.
During the morning session we will learn the basics of preparing a fructose Indigo vat as well as fabric preparation and various dying techniques for combining Indigo with other natural dyes to achieve many different colors variations. To create unique one-of-a-kind patterns on our fabric, we will learn the ancient art of Shibori. This technique involves sewing, folding, twisting, and binding a fabric which prevents the dye from reaching all parts of the fabric, thus creating interesting patterns.
After a short break for lunch and informal discussions on natural dying we will begin the dip dyeing process. We will do repeat dips in the Indigo vat until the desired depth of color is achieved.
We will end with show and tell, sharing our discoveries of this amazing art form.
